Requirements for a Major in History
Bachelor of Arts
A major in history consists of a minimum of 42 credit hours in fourteen courses, of which at least six (6) courses must be numbered 300 or above. HIST 300 is a prerequisite for proceeding to an internship and/or capstone and must be taken before the senior year. Only one 100-level course may count on the major.

Courses qualifying for two or more designations may count in only one area on a student's major or minor program.

Except HIST 496 Senior Project. Completed during a student’s senior year or the preceding summer. EDUC 426 may substitute for the capstone (must be a social science placement if secondary).
Courses taken abroad, special topics courses, and 400-level courses can also satisfy the distribution requirements; please consult with the department chair. A minimum grade of C- is required in all courses used on the history major, as is a minimum GPA of 2.0 for all courses in the major.
The Requirements for Teacher Certification
The program requirements of a student planning to minor in education for the purpose of certification in secondary social science vary slightly from those of other history majors:
- A minimum GPA of 2.80 on the major and on all courses counting toward certification is required by the time of application to the Teacher Preparation Program and must be maintained through graduation.
- HIST 111 and HIST 112 are required.
- In completing the major, education students must include the following:
- Must complete the following non-departmental coursework:ECON 201
- Must complete the Education minor.
Capstone: successful completion of the student teaching portion of the EDUC minor will substitute for the capstone in the major. A social studies placement is required.
